July 4 in Mexico

Monday was a very eventful day. I think it will be one of the most memorable days of my life. We began the day waiting on our dock for a gentleman named Pingo to pick us up for Scuba diving. Yes, I said scuba. For a nominal fee, we got an on board lesson and 40 minutes of underwater diving with a dive master. I was scared the entire time but really glad I did it. The dive master, Hector, goes down with you and makes sure you are comfortable the entire way. He took us down the rope individually and once it looked like that person was situated, he moved on. It took me a while to get down the rope because I was scared out of my mind and my ears were killing me from the pressure. I got comfortable about 30 minutes into it and by the time I knew it, it was time to come up. Some of the fish we saw include: grouper, fairy basslet, stoplight parrotfish, french angelfish, rock beauty, banded butterfly fish, and blue tang. After we got back home, we got in the hot tub for a little while and then came in and ate lunch. Our ears were killing us while we were in the water and Hector told us it would eventually go down, but there was no such luck for Kris. He was in a lot of pain that continually got worse, so we decided to go to the MEGA and get some alcohol (swimmer’s ear). On the way out, Beetlejuice wouldn't start again, so the boys had to push-start it to get going. Here's an action shot:

The security guard helped us. This is not the first time this has happened. Once we arrived in town, K got some instant relief and we were all happy because we didn’t have to take him to the emergency room. Then we went and walked around some shops and Amanda got her haircut. She said it was the same haircut that every other Mexican woman has.

Then it came time to head to the church. I was worried about the language barrier but there seems to be an international language when it comes to soccer. Some kids had on cleats and skin guards and some didn’t have shoes at all. Kris and Curt played soccer with a bunch of boys for an hour while Amanda and I played some other games with the girls. Here’s Kris with a kid and matching jerseys:

After that we stopped on the side of the road and got some rotisserie chicken and tortillas. A stack of 30 homemade corn tortillas will run you 9.5 pesos which is about $0.82 USD. Then we headed home and scarfed down some food. Right now everyone is passed out on the couches. They said they would take a power nap before the final match of Euchre, but we’ll see how that goes. Current score is Amanda & Erin 1 to Curt & Kris 1. Tomorrow is our last day and we are very sad. We have not made a plan yet so we will most likely just be hanging around the island.
