CLT>CAN

Thursday June 30

The day began bright and early with a flight out of Charlotte at 9:35 into Cancun. When we arrived in Cancun, we went picked up our one checked bag with supplies and then went through customs. Kris kept telling me to carry this one bag that was lighter, and I happily obliged, although it didn’t seem that much lighter. Amanda had already figured out that when the dog found something interesting, it sat on the ground and the security guards rewarded him. While Amanda and I were waiting on the guys, the dog came up and sniffed my bag. As soon he got to me, he sat down at my feet with a really excited look on his face. The people asked to look through my bags and finally found something really suspicious. It was an orange. Soon after that, we were on our way out of the airport onto a bus that would take us down to Playa Del Carmen, where the ferry would take us to Cozumel.

Once we got to Playa Del Carmen, we realized that the ferry would not come back for another two hours, so we decided to find a hole in the wall restaurant and eat a bit for lunch. Curt is a very fluent speaker, so we have not had any trouble getting around. In fact, he sometimes haggles with the vendors to try to get cheaper prices (see story about the rental car). We ate a delicious lunch of chicken, rice and black beans. The chicken tasted like it had been cooking for 8 hours, it was so tender.

We made our way to the ferry port and waited with around 200 people to board a ferry from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel. One line was for the Royal Caribbean cruise ship and one to Cozumel. You don’t want to get in the wrong line. We knew the ferry ride would be fairly rocky and muggy and hot, so we decided to sit outside. I saw a shade of blue water that I’ve never seen in my life before. I did not get sick on the fairy, but Amanda started feeling pretty queasy. It actually started raining on the ride and it was kind of refreshing. The ferry was only about 25 minutes, but seemed like an hour.

Stay tuned for what happens when we arrive on the island and try to get our rental car. Here’s a sneak peak:
