Last night after dinner, we tried to drive down to the east side of the island but were stopped about 10 miles south of our house. Apparently, they shut down half of the island at night from 7PM all the way to 6AM. When we were deciding what to do, a the policia stopped and talked to us and filled us in as to why we couldn’t drive down there. They are trying to prevent the transportation of drugs to the mainland. We were kind of creeped out the rest of the night, so we went back home and went swimming at our pool. Kris got bitten by the smallest tiniest crab we’ve ever seen in our lives. It was swimming in the pool with us. After that, Kris taught us all how to play a card game called Euchre. Kris decided to pair with Curt and Amanda and I teamed up. They have decided to challenge us to a rematch because we beat them pretty badly.
Sunday:
Today we got up and went to church at Iglesia Guadalupe. It was one of the hottest places I've ever been. The meet and greet time was interesting. Afterwards, we met with the priest, and we called him Padre. He very graciously offered us some water. We dropped off a bunch of soccer jerseys, soccer balls and cleats. We also made plans to visit them tomorrow night at 5 to play soccer with the kids and help them practice their english. Tonight, Curt is helping me practice my spanish small talk phrases. The Padre told us that he would make an announcement of us coming back tomorrow night at the noon and seven o’clock masses today. He assured us that the kids will come swarming, much like the mosquitoes are to our skin. After church, we came back home and ate lunch and set out on our departure to the east side of the island, since last night was a no-go. We looped around the south end of the island which is pretty much deserted and made our way back up north along the coast. The beach here is a mix of crystal white sands and rocks. We found a public playa and got settled under an umbrella. We invited two older ladies and their two children to sit under it with us, since the sun is so treacherous. They said “Gracias!” but then immediately jumped in the water. We all jumped in, too. I found a live sea urchin. This beach was not as nice as Chankanaab, since it is free and public. It was definitely still beautiful. When we came back in from swimming, one of the little girls brought us over a chicken salad sandwich for which we were very grateful. A little while later, her mother brought over some a dessert of half flan, half chocolate cake. This stuff was delicious. She told us that since we had been swimming we looked very hungry. The people here are very nice. A few minutes after that, a pre-teen girl who spoke broken english asked if she could take our picture for her friend. We all four huddled together. Then she asked if just the two guys could get together and take a picture of them. It was all coming together now. After that, we packed up and made our way back home. We are about to shower and go out to eat for dinner and play some Euchre. Beetlejuice is doing fine, we only had to do a rolling push to start her up once today!
